In the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture, Izumo Shrine, or Izumo-Taisha, is consecrated to the Shinto god Okuninushi-no-Mikoto, founder and protector of medicine, sericulture and agriculture, who is said to have received it in exchange for a piece of land given to another god. It is considered the oldest shrine in Japan, and can trace its history all the way back to the 7th century.
